HAZARDOUS LEAD DUST – CLEARING UP THE PROBLEM IN PERTH November 4, 2010 Comments Off
Attention all Perth home renovators, DIY enthusiasts, builders and handymen (and handy women!)… you may be at risk.
Everyone knows about the dangers of working with asbestos, but another common household substance – lead – can be equally as risky. Exposure to lead can be harmful to your health, causing long-term problems.
Lead dust from the paint in older buildings is the most common source – so people working in the building industry, demolition and renovation of older homes and buildings can be at greater risk. Lead dust also affects everyone living in the home – including pets – with younger children and pregnant women at greater risk.
Lead paint is prevalent in older homes. Up until the early seventies, lead based paint was common, and although it isn’t generally problematic if it is in good condition, the risks increase when it starts to peel, chip and crack or during building works. As lead dust is found in cavity walls, under the floorboards and in roof attics, problems occur when renovations involve breaking into the ceilings (eg adding skylights or building another storey), demolishing cavity walls etc.
Lead dust is also created when lead-based paint is dry scraped, sanded or heated up. It can also form when painted surfaces grind together – and that could include old painted furniture. Some places have DIY kits available for testing paint, but the best result is to get qualified professionals to inspect and assess the risks and then use the right equipment and hazardous dust asbestos and lead vacuum cleaners to clean up.
Painting over the hazard isn’t going to solve the problem. So if you’re building, renovating or perhaps just living in an older home where lead dust could be a problem, call in the experts who will use the right equipment manufactured to regulated safety guidelines to do the job safely, reliably and effectively.
There are a variety of hazardous dust vacuum machines, which are light in weight but heavy duty performers and suitable for all types of rough and tough cleaning. They are easily maneuverable and have features such as flexible plastic hoses suitable for use in confined spaces, such as roofs.
A leading supplier of hazardous dust equipment WA, says there has been growing demand for their equipment particularly in light of recent awareness on the dangers of lead dust – plus the equipment is in demand for use in other cleaning applications such as the building industry, chemical and pharmaceuticals, hospitals and theatres. And on the subject of hospitals, it’s interesting to note that in Australia, in nearly all of the cases where children had been admitted to hospital for treatment for lead poisoning, the lead had come from dust during home renovations – news that every builder and parent should heed.
And if you suddenly realise that you’re munching on your lead pencil while you’re reading this – no need to panic! There is absolutely no lead in a lead pencil – the black stuff is graphite and there’s no danger at all. But the same may not be said for your home or your building project, so when it comes to cleaning up hazardous dust, make sure you do it properly.

HOW TO DEAL WITH SEXUAL HARASSMENT October 11, 2010 Comments Off
’North Country’ is a 2005 film that explores the ugly face of sexual harassment. The film is based on the story of Lois Jenson, a young woman who, after leaving her abusive husband, returns to her home town where she gains employment in an ore mine.
The work is hard and jobs are scarce in the male dominated industry. Times are tough. In an era of ingrained sexism the volatile male workforce reacts to the competition very poorly. The resentment eventually leads to verbal and physical abuse which culminates in sexually inappropriate comments and behaviour.
For almost ten years Lois endured the denigration and the insults before finally speaking out. The result was the first class-action sexual harassment lawsuit in US legal history.
Years of mental anguish and legal manoeuvring follows as she strives for justice in an uncaring and unsympathetic system.
Even today, thirty years later, it is incredible just how widespread workplace sexual harassment is.
Even in my sleepy old city of Perth you cannot help but witness acts of sexual harassment almost every day. Most of the time those involved simply laugh it off as a bit of harmless fun. But it is not harmless, there is always a victim, and for them the experience can lead to prolonged detrimental effects.
With anxiety and depression common in victims sexual harassment also appears to create far reaching trust issues. It damages self-esteem and can even produce physical symptoms of stress such as headaches, backaches, and insomnia.
With positive change in societies attitudes and perspectives more and more incidents are being fully investigated for potential offences in workplace sexual harassment. You have a moral and legal obligation to report harassment even if it not directed at you personally, have it investigated and let the professionals decide if there is the need for action. Sometimes victims need the help of an outside organisation to find the strength to be able to stand up and say “No!” to workplace sexual harassment.
